Truck Drivers Need Sleep Too

by Jacob Crudo

- / N2N / – Truck drivers are the lifeline of this country, every commodity moves by truck. Drivers of these monstrous size rigs drive many hard hours through all kinds of weather conditions to deliver their loads on time. Many drivers make the truck their home away from home, they carry most of their valuable possessions their life partner and many have their pets with them as well. Life on the road can be hard and tedious boring and requiring their ut most concentration. The trucks are heavy and need for the driver to be focused at all times, people don’t realize that it takes much longer to bring a truck weighing 80,000 pounds to a full stop, or to change a lane. they have many gages on their dash board and have to worry about all their tires that they should be performing at optimum performance. All that and more puts our drivers under tremendous pressure.

That’s where the sleep factor comes into play. Drivers need a good nights rest more than the average person. They need to be sharp, if they want to avoid accidents and to be attentive on the roads. Any person that does not sleep enough hours average 8 hours is subject to losing patience quickly and being groggy and in a bad mood.  And then there is the chance of falling asleep on the road.  If that happens no there’s telling what kind of damage an 80,000 thousand pound rig can inflict on
people and property. Lack of sleep is equated to a drunk driver , many drivers pop pills to keep them alert, because they shortchanged themselves on having a good night’s sleep.

Research shows that the quality of sleep that we get can also affect our moods and alertness.

Most mattresses on the trucks are not as thick and plush as the ones we have at home.  Today’s mattresses have a 5” to 7” thickness compared to the 10” to 20” mattress we have at home.

Many regulations are also affecting the type of bed mattress the drivers sleep on.  They have to be fire retardant, so the limitations on the mattress are also a factor. Also, the environment in which we sleep can also affect our sleep.  If the cab is too cold or too hot, or if there is too much outside noise bothering us.  Those things and everything else can affect us and our performance in our waking hours.

Most truck mattresses are built for a single person, so they are in the nature of a twin size, and today with much larger cab sizes they can go up to 53 inches wide and most are 80 inches long. The majority of mattress sizes do not match the sizes for the home bedding industry. And so its only natural that the sheets made for home use do not match those in the sleeper cabs. Most drivers try and rig a sheet from home , and that tends to be a disaster.  First of all the fitted sheets are too short and their depth is so overwhelming that they tend to sag everywhere causing sags and bumps making it impossible to get a good night’s rest.

In doing my research for this product I have noticed that most drivers tend to look at sleep as a necessary evil and don’t relate the fact that a good nights sleep is the recipe for good behaviour on the nations highways.  I have decided to take it upon my self to offer these drivers the key ingredients to getting a good rest on the road.  Nice comfortable fluffy sheets that can make a huge difference on the way they behave on the road.

Our sheets do not require ironing.  Most drivers will launder their bedding at a truck stop and have no ironing capabilities. We also thought of putting 2 pockets on either side for easy access and easy storage for cell phones, watches, or medications that need to be taken during the night. Our quality sheets will include a fitted bottom sheet, a top sheet and 2 pillow cases.  The corner pockets are made to fit exactly the depth of the mattress so there will be no sagging, and there is an elastic all around that will hug the mattress all around, therefore preventing sagging and bumps and clumps.

Our fabric

The fabric used for our bedding is made of a heavy gage brushed polyester that has a cashmere-like feel, very soft and inviting. These sheets offer durability, low maintenance and great value.

What a great idea! I totally agree with the importance of sleep and in my family there is a long line of truck drivers that have struggled with this issue of making the bed more comfortable. I hope to see your product widely available soon.
