Head of Environmental Group Slams BP & America’s Oil Addiction

WASHINGTON – / N2N / – Vikki Spruill, President and CEO of Ocean Conservancy, issued the following statement on the eve of the one-month anniversary of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion:

“The BP Deepwater Horizon oil platform blowout is a human and environmental tragedy. It is heartbreaking for families who lost loved ones, a tragedy for productive ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico, and an economic disaster for communities that depend on healthy fisheries and robust tourism.

“Tomorrow marks one month since this tragedy began, a shocking reminder of BP’s continued failure to stop the flow of oil. Every day we are reminded that BP had no plan to control a blowout of this kind, and that the government failed in its obligations. It is a deafening alarm bell that we need a change in policy and priorities.

“We welcome news that the President will establish an Independent Commission to investigate this disaster. That must be part of an aggressive effort to reform a broken system. The President acknowledged last week that too often government has been too “cozy” with the industry it regulates. That is not a problem that will be solved without undertaking sustained and far-reaching reform.

“Nearly a generation after the Exxon Valdez spill, the nation’s addiction to oil still threatens our coastal communities, marine wildlife, economy, and ocean—our planet’s life support system. It’s time to change course: more drilling does nothing to wean the nation from its dependence on dirty fossil fuels, nor does it move us toward a clean-energy economy that will create new jobs and protect our environment for future generations.”
