PARIS – / N2N / – FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, safely delivered two three-year-old giant pandas from Chengdu, China, to Paris, France. The pandas, Huan Huan and Yuan Zi, arrived on a specially-chartered Boeing 777F flight known as the “FedEx Panda Express” and landed at Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport at noon Paris time, 6 a.m. Eastern time. The arrival of these special animals marks the first time in 10 years that giant pandas will reside in France.

The non-stop flight was chartered especially for the VIPs—Very Important Pandas—and the pair travelled in custom-built enclosures provided by FedEx Express. In-flight, Huan Huan and Yuan Zi spent the journey snoozing and eating bamboo. They were accompanied by a Chinese veterinarian and animal handler as well as the managing director from ZooParc de Beauval to look after their needs throughout the journey.

- / N2N / – I have an acquaintance who owns a small, non-asset third party logistics (3PL) company. He is constantly complaining to me about how cutthroat the transportation business is and how his customers and vendors are always cheating him out of money. He spends a great deal of time trying to collect money and often ends up having to sue companies in order to get them to pay.

I’ve been involved in the transportation industry for a little over three years now and I can tell you that my experience has been exactly the opposite of that of my friend’s. In three years I haven’t had a single customer stiff me for so much as a penny. Sure, there’ve been a few slow-pays, but that’s to be expected. In these 3 years I’ve met a lot of good people and I now consider many of them to be friends.

As a consultant that helps companies get C-TPAT certified my primary customers are importers, NVOCC’s (non vessel operating common carriers / international freight forwarders), U.S. Customs Brokers and Cross-Border Highway Carriers. I also offer a program called “C-TPAT Compliant” for those companies that aren’t eligible for C-TPAT certification such as draymen, customs bonded warehouses, domestic trucking companies, most 3PL’s and domestic shipping and distribution companies. I think that’s a pretty good cross-section of the industry. Even so, I’ve never encountered anyone who’s tried to cheat me.

Maybe I’ve just been lucky or maybe I’m just plain naive. But what about you? I’d be very interested to hear about your experiences. I’m sure there are probably a lot of horror stories out there, but I’ll bet there are also some nice stories about transportation companies watching out for each other and stepping up to do the right thing.

C-TPAT stands for “Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism”. It is a voluntary program administered by U.S. customs and requires participating companies to create a business profile and a security profile on the CBP web portal and to have secure supply chains and documented procedures.

“Some companies choose to pursue C-TPAT Certification all on their own.” said Jeff Platts, the C-TPAT Consultant who helped Airlift obtain their certification. “Achieving C-TPAT Certification is a difficult and challenging process. A good consultant can really help smooth the way.”

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – / N2N / – DHL – the world’s leading express and logistics company, announced that it has deployed a team of logistics experts from its Middle East Disaster Response Team (DRT) to manage a temporary warehouse at Islamabad International Airport. The DRT will provide its services pro bono in close cooperation with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA). Incoming supplies from the United Nations World Food Programme as well as contributions from governments arriving through Islamabad International Airport will be handled by DHL’s DRT via three to five relief flights per day.

Arrival of relief supplies & humanitarian aid in Islamabad, Pakistan

Donations amounting between USD$270,000 and USD$300,000 (€212,500 to €236,100) have poured in from the DHL offices worldwide including Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan and the company’s corporate head office in Bonn, Germany. Humanitarian aid including milk powder, clothes, canned food and medical supplies has also been sent to aid flood victims.

Frank Appel, Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Post DHL – the parent company of DHL – commented: “The situation in Pakistan is still very serious and we hope we can support ongoing relief efforts with our Disaster Response Team, professionally as usual.”

“Millions of people are affected by the water and temporary shelter is the greatest need, particularly food, tents and tarpaulins,” says Chris Weeks, Director, Humanitarian Affairs, Deutsche Post DHL who is currently on-the-ground with the DRT Middle East team in Islamabad. “We have set up the necessary logistics at the airport to facilitate the further transport of incoming goods over the next couple of weeks.”

DHL's Disaster response Team (DRT)

DHL will leverage its core competencies in logistics as well as its global network to support the mission as DHL employees across borders and different business units work together to help the afflicted. Approximately 25 volunteers from DHL’s DRT Middle East and Asia Pacific office are expected to be deployed on the ground in Pakistan for up to three weeks starting 26 August to help unload and palletize goods for further distribution. DRT Middle East will assist in relief efforts for the first two weeks while DRT Asia Pacific will take over in the third and final week.

The deployment was kicked-off on 26 August following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Disaster Management Authority Pakistan.

Besides deploying Disaster Response Team (DRT), DHL offices in Pakistan also launched relief efforts on 2 August, comprising the management of a donation drive from DHL staff worldwide and the setup of medical camps at several villages around the Muzzaffar Garh district. To date, the camps have provided medical relief to over 2000 people and provided transportation for a number of patients in critical condition to Bakhtawar Amin Memorial Trust Hospital. The camps are also stocked with supplies to cover the basic health needs of the flood victims, especially the treating of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid fever and malaria.

Plans for DHL Express Pakistan to manage the provision of food rations and help in the rehabilitation process are already in the pipeline while DHL Global Forwarding Pakistan employees have been delivering relief supplies directly to flood victims in Nowshehra.

- / N2N / – UPS now confirms that two of its crewmembers, Captain Doug Lampe of Louisville, Kentucky, and First Officer Matthew Bell of Sanford, Florida, lost their lives in the crash of Flight 6 Sept. 3, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The two pilots were flying a 747-400 en route to Cologne, Germany, when it crashed near Dubai International Airport shortly after takeoff.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and all of us at UPS extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of both of these crewmembers,” said UPS CEO Scott Davis. “Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with them during this difficult time.”

The UPS Family Assistance Team is working with the victims’ families to help them in their time of need.

Captain Lampe, 48, has been with UPS since 1995. First Officer Bell, 38, has been with UPS since 2006. Both crewmembers flew out of UPS’s Anchorage, Alaska domicile, or pilot base.

The aircraft, tail number N571UP, was just three years old, entering UPS service off the Boeing production line in September 2007. The airframe had flown 9977 hours, completing 1764 takeoffs and landings. It was up to date on all maintenance, having just completed a major inspection in June 2010.

UPS owns 12 747-400s, eight of which are new, and four of which have been purchased from other carriers and adapted for UPS use. The aircraft, which has a payload capacity of nearly 258,600 pounds, is used on long-range international routes, such as the regular Dubai-Cologne routing.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is dispatching an aviation investigation team to assist the General Civil Aviation Authority (GACC) of the United Arab Emirates in the crash investigation. The GCAA will take the lead on the investigation and release all information on the progress of the investigation.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – / N2N / – FedEx Corporation (NYSE: FDX) announced that it expects earnings to be in the range of $1.05 to $1.25 per diluted share for the first quarter ending August 31, up 81% to 116% from $0.58 per diluted share a year ago. The company’s previous guidance for the quarter was $0.85 to $1.05 per diluted share.
For the full year, FedEx expects earnings per diluted share of $4.60 to $5.20, up from $4.40 to $5.00, which reflects the current market outlook for fuel prices and a continued moderate recovery in the global economy. The company reported earnings of $3.76 per diluted share last year.

“Our revenue and earnings growth are exceeding original expectations, primarily due to better-than-anticipated growth in FedEx Express and FedEx Ground volumes,” said Alan B. Graf Jr., FedEx Corp. executive vice president and chief financial officer. “Our package volume growth rates in our first quarter are continuing at a pace similar to our fourth quarter. Of particular benefit to our earnings is the continued strong demand for our higher-margin FedEx International Priority® (IP) package and freight services, with IP package volumes expected to grow more than 20% again this quarter. Customers are favorably responding to our superior service offerings, the capabilities of our unparalleled global network and the best-in-market cut-off times we now offer from numerous points in Asia.”

With the improved outlook, FedEx is also planning to fully restore the company match for 401(k) plans at all FedEx companies effective January 1, 2011. The cost of this restoration is included in the company’s earnings outlook.

FedEx will release the details of its first quarter results on September 16, 2010.

PLANTATION, Fla. & CHICAGO – / N2N / – Pizzas 4 Patriots, a non-profit organization, is teaming up with DHL Express, the world’s leading global express delivery and logistics company, and AT&T to send thousands of Edwardo’s Natural pizzas to U.S. servicemen and women overseas in time for Independence Day, 2010.

This Independence Day, U.S. servicemen and women at bases in Iraq, Afghanistan as well as South Korea will get a taste of home – Chicago and New York Style. Over 5,000 Award Winning Stuffed Pizzas from Edwardo’s Natural Pizza in Chicago, along with hundreds of pizzas from New York Flying Pizza will leave the U.S. on June 26, in time for Independence Day celebrations at U.S. military bases. DHL Express has donated its global shipping network for the delivery.

According to Ret. MSgt Mark Evans of Pizzas 4 Patriots, his non-profit has been incrementally gearing up to expand pizza deliveries to the U.S. servicemen and women stationed across the world, with this July 4 adding a special distribution to those stationed in Korea.

“We should never forget the sacrifices of the men and women based around the world that defend our freedoms and those of our allies, which is why we have been working to expand our distribution to all regions of the world where U.S. Commands are based,” said Ret. MSgt Mark Evans. “Since we started Pizzas 4 Patriots, the letters of appreciation that we get from the military as well as from friends and family of those stationed overseas is really heartwarming and makes it all worthwhile.”

The mission to show appreciation and bring reminders of home to the men and women in uniform overseas was conceived by Ret. MSgt. Mark Evans of Elk Grove Village, Ill. In 2008, Evans’ 15-year-old son Kent asked if there was a way to deliver freshly-frozen Chicago-style pizzas to servicemen and women stationed throughout Iraq in time for July Fourth Independence Day Celebrations. The initial effort required 2,000 pizzas and was extremely well received. Since the first effort, and with the support of DHL Express, Evans has been able to ship over 45,000 pizzas to U.S. military personnel overseas.

Over 5,000 pizzas, packaged in temperature-cooled containers, will be picked up at the Edwardo’s National Pizza restaurant on Wednesday, June 23 at 10:00 a.m. in Wheeling, Illinois for a formal send-off event. The pizzas, along with letters of support to the troops, will be transported from Chicago to DHL’s hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport where they will move onward to regional DHL hubs in the Middle East and Asia. DHL provides door-to-door, final mile delivery for the entire distribution, working closely with the U.S. military to ensure the pizzas are delivered fresh and ready to heat and serve at various military bases.

DHL has been selected by the Department of Defense for service to numerous locations around the globe based on the extensive service capabilities and “first in market” approach provided in support of US servicemen and women. DHL was also the first international air express carrier to provide service to Iraq and Afghanistan, and operates the most extensive logistics service in the Middle East Region.

“As the specialists in international shipping, DHL is honored to leverage its global network in support for Pizzas 4 Patriots which continues to lift the spirits of our brave servicemen and women, “ said Christine Nashick, Vice President of Marketing for DHL Express USA. “During important holidays, it’s even tougher to be away from friends and family, so we trust these reminders of home will bring smiles to deserving military personnel.”

About Pizzas 4 Patriots

Pizzas 4 Patriots is a non-profit organization with the mission of making a positive difference in the lives of our servicemen and women. We have been fortunate to receive donations, ranging from financial to products and services, from individuals, families, corporations, and other organizations, all wanting to show appreciation for the sacrifice of our brave troops.

SAN FRANCISCO – / N2N / – Four lions, rescued by Animal Defenders International (ADI) from a Bolivian circus when the country banned the use of animals in circuses, will be landing today at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and then heading on to a life of luxury at the ARK2000 sanctuary in Calaveras County.

Rescued Lions Transported to Ark2000 in Northern California

ADI, which has previously rescued and relocated animals in Europe, South America and Africa have described it as one of the most complex logistical operations they have ever undertaken but say it will be worth all of the effort when the animals walk free.

CSI actress Jorja Fox, ADI spokesperson for the operation, will greet the lions at SFO later today said, “These magnificent lions have lived all their lives in a tiny cage on the back of a truck. They have never felt the grass beneath their feet or had the space to truly run and play. They symbolize everything that is wrong with using animals to entertain people in circuses and that will be vividly clear when they run free in their new home. What a way to start memorial weekend. These lions really are home for the holidays.”

The lions were unloaded in the VIP area of San Francisco airport and checked by the ADI veterinary team, given a drink of water by Jorja Fox, and will then loaded onto a truck for the drive to ARK2000.
The lions will be released on Friday into the wonderful new natural habitat that ADI have constructed in partnership with the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) who run the world-renowned 2,300-acre, ARK2000.

Pat Derby, President and Founder of the Performing Animal Welfare Society, said, “Animal Defenders International contacted PAWS last year about providing a permanent home for the African lions remaining in Bolivia. Because we have ARK2000, our 2,300-acre sanctuary in San Andreas, California, we were happy to be able to help.

Ed Stewart, PAWS Sanctuary Director, added, “We have been busy developing plans for the new lion habitat. Each lion has his or her own denning area and a vast natural habitat full of trees, shrubs and grasses.

“The next few weeks will be very busy as we carefully evaluate each animal and determine if any necessary medical treatments may be required. Each of the lion’s diets will be assessed and progress reports will be updated several times each day.

“We are all grateful to Bob Barker for his support of our sanctuary. As with every animal at PAWS, we are committed to providing life-time care. Each of the new lions will now have the peace and freedom to do as they please. They can nap or roam, sunbathe or explore. It’s their home and they will make their own choices.”

Derby said, “We congratulate ADI for their tireless efforts to rescue these animals and we applaud the government of Bolivia and its good citizens for banning the cruel exploitation of animals used in circuses. This is certainly a landmark victory and we hope that other countries around the world, including the United States, will take notice and follow suit.”

Jan Creamer, ADI President who has been in Bolivia coordinating the rescue and who will be flying in with the lions, said: “With the Congresses of Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Chile all considering legislation to ban animal circuses, this rescue is not merely symbolic, it shows that we are prepared to make a real commitment to ensure that bans on animal circuses can be fully implemented and animals can be saved.

“As other animals need homes we will be assessing these on a case by case basis. With these lions there were clear welfare and public safety issues. When dealing with lions there are not only welfare and public safety issues, we are therefore delighted to be working with PAWS who have enormous experience with big cats and a reputation for setting the highest standards in animal care.”

The ADI rescue operation was backed by Bob Barker.

About Animal Defenders International (ADI):

With offices in Los Angeles, London and Bogotá, Animal Defenders International (ADI) campaigns to protect animals in entertainment; replacement of animals in experiments; worldwide traffic in endangered species; vegetarianism; factory farming; pollution and conservation. ADI also rescues animals in distress worldwide. ADI gathered evidence has led to campaigns and legislative action all over the world to protect them.

ADI’s Mission: To educate, create awareness, and promote the interest of humanity in the cause of justice, and the suppression of all forms of cruelty to animals wherever possible to alleviate suffering, and to conserve and protect animals and the environment.

- / N2N / – The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) rose 0.9 percent in March from its February level, rising for the third consecutive month, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today. The March Freight TSI rose 2.6 percent from March 2009, the first year-to-year increase in the freight index since July 2008.

BTS, a part of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration, reported that the Freight TSI index has risen 4.5 percent over the last 10 months, starting in June, after declining 15.3 percent in the previous 10 months beginning in August 2008. The index has increased in eight of the last 10 months. The index started 2010 with an increase of 1.6 percent in the first three months. For additional historic data, go to http://www.bts.gov/xml/tsi/src/index.xml.

The Freight TSI measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments in ton-miles, which are then combined into one index. The index measures the output of the for-hire freight transportation industry and consists of data from for-hire trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight.

The March Freight TSI of 97.8 is a 4.5 percent increase from the recent low of 93.5 reached in May 2009. In May, the index was at its lowest level since June 1997. The Freight TSI is down 13.4 percent from its historic peak of 112.9 reached in May 2006.

Although the index rose 2.6 percent from March 2009 to March 2010, it still remains below the March level of all the previous years since 1997. The 13.2 percent decline from March 2008 to March 2009 left the Freight TSI at its lowest level for March since March 1997 when it was 90.8.

The freight index is down 12.5 percent in the five years from March 2005. The index is down 1.9 percent in the 10 years from March 2000.

The TSI is a seasonally adjusted index that measures changes from the monthly average of the base year of 2000. It includes historic data from 1990 to the present. Release of the April index is scheduled for June 9.

For a video explanation of the TSI, see Overview of the Transportation Services Index. For a BTS report explaining the TSI, Transportation Services Index and the Economy is available for download in the BTS bookstore.

Transportation Services Index for Passengers

The TSI for passengers rose 1.6 percent in March from its February level. The Passenger TSI March 2010 level of 109.5 was 0.9 percent above the March 2009 level, following a one-year decline. The 7.3 percent decrease from March 2008 to March 2009 was the largest March-to-March decrease in the 20-year history of the TSI. The index is up 0.7 percent in five years and up 10.6 percent in 10 years.

The passenger TSI measures the month-to-month changes in travel conducted in the for-hire passenger transportation sector. The seasonally adjusted index consists of data from air, local transit and intercity rail.

Combined Freight and Passenger Index
